What's your most exciting or surprising travel experience?

I once spent 30 minutes with a border agent in West Africa, attempting to cross into Ghana from Togo without a visa. At first I was worried, but his bemused indifference eventually put me at ease.

What's your favorite mode of transportation? Why?

Bicycling, by far, because you really appreciate wherever you are on a human scale.

What's the most underrated destination in your opinion?

I have a soft spot for Oil City, Pennsylvania. It was a major hub of the American oil industry for nearly a century, and there are still rows of beautiful Victorian mansions where the executives lived. Unfortunately, there’s been major disinvestment and population loss, but it’s a special place. They’re trying to bring it back as an artists’ colony and have had some success.

Who would you choose as a seatmate on a cross-continential road trip?

A sense of humor is the most important quality in a travel companion. If we’re counting the deceased, I’d go with H.L. Mencken. Living, probably Abbi from Broad City.
