Consult with me

Normally no stranger to luxury, Alison once camped in Paris in a leaking kids' play tent ("don't ask"), and has often slept out under the stars in a swag across the Australian Outback ("now that's luxury money can't buy") on her globetrotting way. As a journalist/editor/managing editor and author, Alison's career has included newspapers, mass circulation weekly magazines, glamorous glossies, books, guides and all kinds of travel writing – destinations, food, wine, wellbeing, spas, art, drive/road trips and off the beaten track. Nearly (but not quite) all the important things in life!

What's the most underrated destination in your opinion?

Maybe it’s your own back yard? Or a big city that’s an airport hub you’d planned to leave as soon as possible but really has much to offer – Birmingham near Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK, for instance!

What is the most important thing you've learned from traveling?

Check that you have your up-to-date passport (and visa!). Then check again. Has your passport expired or is it due to expire? No-one believes it could happen to them, until it does.

Who would you choose as a seatmate on a cross-continential road trip?

My husband, NZ-born photographer/videographer Ken Martin. We have always travelled together on road and other trips for work and pleasure. He’s very practical and calm in a crisis as prof. photographers need to be able handle almost any situation. We enjoy the same kind of food and – well, it’s a lot of fun.

What's your favorite mode of transportation? Why?

Cars. I love driving and my dream car is a navy blue Maserati. Helicopters, planes, ferries, trains, ships, 4×4, on foot – I love travelling so whatever it takes, really.
